Chronology
Follows a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts who use the town’s sudden interest in the occult to build a reputation as a satanic metal band until a strange series of events sparks a witch hunt that leads back to them. Hysteria by Def Lepard, Heaven’s on fire by KISS, Speaking in tongues by Meatloaf, Can I play with madness by Iron Maiden, Die young by Black Sabbath, Mother by Danzig, It’s late by Queen and Dance Macabre by Ghost. .It’s 1989.
Dylan, Jordy and Spud are the underdogs that no one notices and have a heavy metal band that doesn’t care
When the star football player dies in an apparent satanic cult ritual, Dylan is inspired by cheerleader Judith to use the situation to gain the band some notoriety. It’s impossible not to compare this show to Stranger Things, as it has similar characters, and treads the same ground as a subplot from that show’s fourth season. But speaking as someone who has ACTUALLY been falsely branded as a Satanist (yes, Satanic Panic was a very thing), I feel that Hysteria did a much better job with this story.
As Dylan and Judith, Emjay Anthony and Jessica Tresca exude ’80s charisma
The show has a supernatural bent, but is more grounded in reality than Stranger Things ever was. And as someone else mentioned, the fashion and music are in the 80’s range (even going into the 70’s), but that’s also a problem with the other show — it’s 39; it’s hard to repeat the exact time, so I can ignore it. A cast can make or break a show and they obviously had a great casting director.
As Jordi, Chiara Aurelia feels like an authentic goth girl
Bruce Campbell perfectly cast as the sheriff of the town, who provides most of the funniest moments. Julie Bowen is terrific as Dylan’s mother, who has the acting skills to sell him when her story turns cliche. And I have to mention Nolan North as Dylan’s father, a character who is wonderfully written and performed (it’s strangely refreshing to see a father who isn’t a no-nonsense jerk).
The story is nicely wrapped up with some teases for another round
Somewhat typically, they backed up Spud’s black character, but Kesey Curtis still made him likable. However, the second black lead, a bully named Cliff, was imbued with tremendous depth by Elijah Richardson. There are a few things that keep Hysteria from being as great as the first season of Stranger Things, but it’s definitely better than some of the later seasons.
