After his home has been conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum and must look to his past for the strength to restore the glory of Rome to its people. In the years following the release of the first film, there were many attempts to write a sequel. His version focused on the more mythic elements of ancient Rome and would have seen Maximus arrive in the afterlife only to be confronted by other souls yet to ascend.
He is eventually commissioned by Jupiter and other Roman deities to return to Earth to find and kill Hephaestus, a former deity who betrayed them. From there, he is resurrected as a Christian and travels back to Rome on a mission to stop the spread of Christianity as he crosses paths with the new emperor, Lucius. The film would have ended with Maximus cursed for eternity, a montage of the soldier fighting during the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War eventually reveals a modern-day Maximus working in the Pentagon in Washington.
Emperor Geta: The Gods HAVE SPOKE!. Featured in The 7PM Project: July 3, 2024 episode (2024). DeMille on steroids.
While Russell Crowe’s Maximus in Gladiator was born of greatness, the main character, played with intensity by Paul Mescal, becomes greatness as the film progresses. There are some stunning scenes in the film and I have to say that Ridley Scott really redeems himself here after last year’s inconsistent fiasco, «Napoleon». «Gladiator II» will definitely be a contender for next year’s Oscars in several categories.
Aside from the fact that Mescal doesn’t have the same weight and screen presence as Crowe playing Massimo, and that he just had a Hans Zimmer vibe musically instead of the real thing (or person), I walked away thinking maybe this was the best time, when I was at the cinema this year.
