Alana Higman, a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan and her family are competing to win the team's Fan of the Year contest, in a process judged by the director of fan engagement Derrick.. The film was shot on location on the historic Independence Square in Independence, Missouri, which actually looks like that year round. The locations that served as the Higman family's store and Norma and Nick's BBQ restaurant are family owned shops in real life too.
The Square also does a Christmas lighting like the one in the film.. This movie was a pure, fun, heartwarming delight, and I am still smiling over it. It was such a delightful love story and Christmas movie.
It spoke to me as a lover of rom-coms, but also to the sports fan in me who loves the excitement of supporting my teams-both my own team and my new adopted team. Go Chiefs! I also really enjoyed Derrick's story, as he was lonely and adrift and perhaps a little bit devoid of a full and tradition-filled family life, and this warm, welcoming, colorful family really drew him in.
The writing was exquisite and sweet, gently and skillfully coaxing a few unexpected tears, delighted laughs, and the occasional audible "awwww" from my lips. Hunter King and Tyler Hynes' performances were flawless and genuine and fun, and we could feel such energy and connection from both as they brought their characters to life. This movie also was so beautifully enriched by the supporting cast, who really brought depth and color to this lovely story.
