It follows a seemingly normal family with a dark secret: they are vampires. They choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings, but one day their truth is revealed. Based on the YA novel by bestselling author Matt Haig. Matt Haig was recommended to me this year and I haven’t read much else since. His non-fiction books like Reasons to Live are a must-read and really impressed me, The Midnight Library was also brilliant (fiction). As a lifelong horror (and vampire in particular) fan, I therefore refused to follow our house rule of not watching anything less than a 6/10 IMDb rated film, so I had to make my own and ultimately paid the price for deviating. This is a terrible adaptation of what is one of Matt’s least engaging books and with too much missing backstory and story changes to satisfy some misguided social obligation, it really misses the mark. I gave it a 5 because I could appreciate what it was supposed to be after reading the book, however if we had gone straight to the movie I think it would have been less. I really hope that future movie adaptations of his books are more worthy because he is a fantastic storyteller and human being!
