SEPTA operates in the Philadelphia metropolitan area

Chronology

A group of enterprising high school seniors band together to foil a lucrative college admissions scheme. A remake of the Thai film Bad Genius (2017). The film opens with a scene in which Lin is shown calculating the cost of commuting to the private school she attended. The film shows a stack of public transportation tickets clearly displaying the SEPTA logo, which stands for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Half a minute later, Lin and her dad identify the city as Seattle. References Roots (1977). Bad Genius (2024) is a remake of the 2017 Thai film of the same name.

Somehow it becomes a bland, lazy, and forced experience

It follows the original 2017 recipe as a recipe—down to the dialogue, sets, atmosphere, characters’ ambitions, and even the characters’ placement on the set. This one follows that recipe exactly, with just a slight deviation towards the end and a few minor changes to the original plot. To understand why, we need to talk a little about the original 2017 film and what made it so special. Bad Genius (2017) is a film that I loved so much that I’ve watched it more times than I care to admit; so yes, I’m biased. It has its flaws – the sound effects and direction are a bit cheesy at times – but it’s a successful and engaging heist film. It was a huge success in its home country of Thailand and Southeast Asia. But what this film did was what really appealed to me.

Lina *was* smart

The original 2017 film took on the difficult task of writing smart characters and putting them in a testing environment that would otherwise have been boring to film. Somehow, it’s incredibly exciting. It took four fantastic actors with little or no acting experience to make it a star. The production was through the roof and included some great effects from the soundtrack to the text overlay used to convey the message. She really seemed like a bright young woman with great talent who needed to be cared for by a loving father; credits to the original writers. Her relationships felt natural, and the supporting actors made sure of that with their acting and chemistry. Her methods and schemes were presented satisfactorily and likably throughout the film.

It has no charm

Her relationship with her father was emotional and well-handled from both sides. The story had pace and purpose, but most importantly, it HAPPENED. And it was all filmed and produced in a country that is perhaps not considered a cinematic powerhouse. Bad Genius (2024) has little to nothing of what it is trying to copy. The remake somehow manages to take all the right ingredients – lighting, tense music, the same plot points, the same characters – and turn it into a sloppy re-imagining of the original’s poor dub. It has no great moments. It has almost zero emotion.

The supporting characters are lacking

Lin (2024) *acts smart*, but we don’t think the character is really a genius. The classroom scenes *feel* like they’re trying to convey tension, but for the most part they feel silly. Not exciting in the slightest. All that’s left is a good father figure, thanks to the excellent Benedict Wong and a good performance by Kalina Liang, who tries to bring the poor character to life. There’s no reason to watch it. Watch the original if you haven’t already (or if you want to watch it again), and thank me later.
