Windows 11. The main part of this announcement was to introduce a significant user interface change codenamed Sun Valley. As we know, much of the UX changes will be borrowed from the Windows 10X shell, and Windows 10X will not be released. Now, as expected, the Windows 11 leaks begin.
What’s new in Windows 11:
— Windows 11 will get a completely new look. Microsoft clearly needs a good reason to drop its previous claims and continue to leave Windows 10 with a new OS number. And the brand new look is great for that. The Redmond giant has been preparing a new appearance update with the code name Sun Valley («Valley of the sun») for a long time — apparently Windows 11 was under this name. The Sun Valley project flashed on the network for a long time — Microsoft regularly revealed details of the new interface style, insiders shared previously unknown information, and popular designers in their circles drew realistic concepts based on all this information.
— Startup and system items will hover above the bottom bar. Start is the calling card and face of every latest version of Windows. It’s no wonder that the developers will transform it again in Windows 11, but not so much functionally, as visually — the Start window will float above the bottom bar. Admittedly, this small change makes the system much fresher. Judging by information from the Internet, Microsoft will not radically change the «inside» of this menu — innovations will affect only the design of the window itself. The control panel will also float and its design will be exactly the same as «Start». The Action Center will be combined with control buttons — something similar has been used for a long time in some other operating systems. Almost all mentions of this new menu indicate that it will be like an island — controls will be on one separate panel, notifications on another, and specific elements (eg the player) on another separate panel.
— The straight corners will disappear and will be replaced by rounded corners. It is true that insiders and concept designers do not agree on this issue — some are convinced that Microsoft will not change its tradition and will keep right angles, while others are convinced that Microsoft will jump on the rounded trend in 2021. The latter better fits the definition of «all-new Windows» — the menus floating above the screen alone are not enough to consider the new design truly new. Rounding aims to affect almost everything in the system, from context menus and system panels to all application windows. It is true that the opinions of concept designers differ on this issue as well — some draw curves in all possible interface elements, others combine them with right angles.
— There will be transparent background with blur everywhere. There is disagreement on the Internet about the island style of the storefront, the design of the corners and the levitation effect of the menu, but almost everyone agrees on the transparency of the window. The vast majority of design leaks and renders show transparency and blur in all windows, whether at least in the Start menu or Explorer. Moreover, these effects are visible even in the assembly of the canceled operating system Windows 10X, which Microsoft developed in parallel with the Sun Valley project for devices with two screens and weaker gadgets.
